About the Classic
The Barney Miller Surf Classic, now celebrating its 25th year, was established in 1999 as a fundraising event by Joel ‘Tubby’ Bath. The event was initially conceived to raise money to support Sawtell local and adaptive surfing champion Barney Miller, after Barney developed a debilitating spinal cord injury, restricting him to a wheelchair. What began as a tribute to Barney’s resilience and love for surfing has grown into a cornerstone event for the Coffs Harbour community and the broader Australian surfing scene.
2025 Beneficiary
The 2025 Barney Miller Surf Classic is proud to support Coffs Harbour local, Michael (Mike) Thorncroft, a young man whose journey of resilience and determination inspires us all.
In January 2024, Mike’s life changed in an instant following a motocross accident. The crash left him with devastating injuries, including rib and spinal fractures, a torn rotator cuff, and a spinal cord injury that resulted in paraplegia. Despite these challenges, Mike has approached his recovery with unwavering courage, working tirelessly to regain strength and independence. His determination to reduce his reliance on a wheelchair is a testament to his incredible spirit.
25 years on, the event has raised more than $500,000 for people living with a spinal cord or life-changing injury.
